TCLP-January 2023 Highlights 

In this video: 

Lin Wan-Lin (Butler Academy, SC) leads a Lunar New Year vocabulary review game during which students identify the four main Lunar New Year dishes. 

Bouslam Abaid (Seventy-First High School, NC) practices the names of colors in Arabic with students through an in-classroom basketball game. 

Cheng Hsian-Lan (Bellows Free Academy Fairfax, VT) shares a role-play activity where students practice ordering food in Mandarin. 

Ola Sofi (West Sylvan Middle School, OR) reviews with students how to tell time in Arabic.  

Arabic Culture Day

During the “Arabic Cultural Day,” Ms. Ismael's students held an after-school event to showcase their acquired Arabic language skills and promote the middle school's Arabic program to the school, teachers, and parents.

Beyond Differences

For Ms. Sofi’s “Beyond Differences” project, students introduced Arabic culture and language to the school through an international week that concluded with an event celebrating diversity. The focus of the program was on how Middle Eastern culture influenced other disciplines. 

The Butler Academy Treasure Hunter

Since Butler Academy (BA) students only have one Mandarin class per week and do not have the resources or materials to help with self-learning, Ms. Lin created a project to help students stay motivated while learning a foreign language.

2023 Chinese New Year Celebration

Ms. Huang's "2023 Chinese New Year Celebration” project invited students, teachers and staff, parents, and community members to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Ms. Huang coordinated and organized the day-long event, during which students and teachers prepared a song to perform on stage for parents and the community.

Cooking Lessons and Moroccan Soiree

Deadline Date

Mr. Hayab's "Cooking Lessons and a Moroccan Soirée" project had two phases. In the first phase, project participants took part in Moroccan cooking and culture classes, and in the second, participants organized a Moroccan Soiree in Ramadan for the community members.

Chang Ying-Yi (Haven Elementary, GA) reviews Christmas vocabulary with kindergarten students through a game of Duck, Duck, Goose.

Mona Ismail (Ashford School, CT) guides students to read aloud their daily routine in Arabic from their completed daily routine charts.

Huang Hsin-Yi (East Voyager Academy of Charlotte, NC) practices counting from one to one hundred in Mandarin with students through song.

Moulay Tahar Kettani (Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts, MI) guides students in making and using a Q-Wheel to support students in writing and pronouncing Arabic letters. They also used the Q-Wheel to write their and their family's English names in Arabic.

Chang Jen-Yin (OB Gates Elementary, VA) celebrated Thanksgiving with her students by doing crafts, creating a Thanksgiving “Thank you” video for parents, and leading a matching game focused on themed vocabulary in Mandarin.

Ola Sofi (West Sylvan Middle School, OR) facilitates a letter learning exercise with seventh and eighth grade that challenges students to listen to a letter and make the shape of it using paper dots and then read Arabic words with two to three letters.

Lin Wan-Lin (Butler Academy, SC) leads fourth graders in a review lesson on body and face vocabulary by having students read pinyin and characters, match characters with pictures, and practice on individual worksheets.
