TCLP 2022-2023 Year in Review

Last year, the 2022-2023 cohort of TCLP exchange teachers made a lasting impact in their host schools and communities by sharing their languages and cultures.

The 2022-2023 cohort of teachers included 8 teachers from Taiwan, 4 teachers from Egypt, and 4 teachers from Morocco who, collectively, taught over 1,238 students in their classes and participated in 1,004 hours of outreach in their host schools and communities across the U.S.

At the end of the school year, students and parents reported dramatic gains in students' command of Arabic and Mandarin as well as increased understanding of their TCLP exchange teachers home culture.

Ezzat Belal (Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts, MI) helps students practice introducing themselves and to say goodbye in Arabic in pairs. Students line up and take turns practicing their introduction script and say goodbye.

Chi Jiu-Ching (Vanguard Van Gogh Elementary & Secondary, TX) has students learn fruits names in Mandarin by using Realia. The students practice fruit names and talk about whether or not they like them.

Xiang Keyuan (Bellows Free Academy Fairfax, VT) leads students in a card game to learn Mandarin numbers 1 to 10. Students say the number of the card being put down. If the number matches the leader's card, they will win the pile of cards. Whoever has the most cards at the end are the winner.

Luo Qiumei (OB Gates Elementary, VA) teaches elementary school students about the vocabulary related to the story of Mid Autmn Festival. The students practice the festival terms by playing a competitive matching game.

Critical Language Project Grants Support Three Community Projects

This year, TCLP exchange teachers completed a variety of Critical Language Projects (CLPs) that supported the Arabic and Mandarin language programs at their host schools.

With the support of a CLP grant for Round 25, three teachers completed their CLP projects at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year. The teachers applied for and won these grants in March 2023. Two current TCLP teacher accomplished their projects while in their U.S. communities. One TCLP Alumni completed the project in his home country. 

2023-2024 Exchange Teachers attend Fall Workshop in Philadelphia, PA

From October 19-21, TCLP welcomed the 2023-2024 exchange and mentor teachers to the Fall Workshop that took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 

During the annual workshop, the 2023-2024 exchange teacher cohort reunited to share their success stories and challenges, as well as learn new tools for classroom management, scaffolding, and cross-cultural communication. Mentor teachers similarly had the opportunity to share their experiences with each other and together pairs brainstormed ways to grow their language programs through Critical Language Projects and exchange teachers' capstone projects.

Fall 2023 TCLP Alumni Highlights

Even after TCLP, alumni continue to participate in the TCLP vision and mission.

This year TCLP alumni facilitated events, attended professional development, and earned additional teaching certificates in a variety of ways.  

2023-2024 Exchange Teachers Settling into their U.S. Host schools and Communities

TCLP exchange teachers have enjoyed exploring their U.S. host communities, started building relationships with colleagues and community members, and began teaching Arabic and Mandarin language and culture.

This year’s TCLP cohort consists of sixteen Mandarin teachers and five Arabic teachers in sixteen states, from Oregon to New York. The exchange teachers work with students from preschool up to 12th grade and teach between 12 and 264 students at their schools. Several teachers also regularly reach their entire school community through monthly newsletters, outreach, or presentations on the daily announcements.  

2023-2024 TCLP Orientation

On August 1, TCLP staff welcomed the 2023-2024 cohort of 21 exchange teachers from China, Egypt, Morocco, and Taiwan to Washington, DC.

The annual TCLP Orientation began on August 1 and over the course of ten days, the exchange teachers participated in a variety of in-person sessions to prepare them to effectively transition into their schools and communities.

Moulay Tahar Kettani (Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts, MI) and his students play Tetris together to strengthen their memory of Arabic direction words “up”, “down”, “left”, and “right”.

Cheng Hsian-Lan (Bellows Free Academy Fairfax, VT) organizes an activity for students to make plans and familiarize vocabulary and grammar patterns that will help them name different natural views and scheduling weekend activities.

Chang Ying-Yi (Haven Elementary, GA) teaches students the names of food in Mandarin by playing a guessing game in which they guess the names of food based on their photos.

Tsai Yueh-Wen (District of Columbia International School, DC) organizes group work activities to support students remember words and sentence structures and patterns efficiently.
