By the end of today’s lesson, students will be able to: Get some specific ideas about calligraphy, including: the scholars’  four treasures for calligraphy, names of different strokes, different kinds of scripts, materials and stuffs used to do calligraphy. Grasp some basic knowledge about couplets for Chinese New Year: the origins and different types of couplets; the format of a typical pair of couplets; the purpose and usages of couplets; the common topics of couplets about Chinese New Year; the correspondence of couplets; Know some customs about sticking Fu characters during Chinese New Year; Notice the combination between calligraphy and couplets;

By the end of today’s lesson, students will be able to: Search some answers to the essential questions about the background of Beijing Opera Become familiar with Beijing Opera. Recognize symbolism in Beijing opera such as colors in make-up and costumery. Recognize and overcome stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans in performing arts and media. Design and create their own masks using the symbolism evident in Beijing Opera masks. Gain experience handling art materials such as paint and paintbrushes.
